Jason Geathers is the Ironman of the Week

GEATHERS, SMITH RECEIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
SaberCats DB Ties League Record with Three INTs

SAN JOSE, Calif. (July 16, 2008) – San Jose SaberCats WR/LB JASON GEATHERS was named the AFL’s Ironman of the Week while DB OMARR SMITH collected the ADT’s Defensive Player of the week accolade, the Arena Football League announced today.

“Both of these men stepped up big for us last Saturday,” Head Coach and General Manager Darren Arbet emphasized. “Jason is one of the best athletes this league has to offer, and you can never count out Omarr grabbing a few picks in a pivotal game.”

Geathers (6-4, 225, Miami) became the first player in AFL postseason history to record a touchdown three different ways after he caught two, ran for another score and returned an interception for a touchdown in the 81-55 victory over the Rampage. He started the game at linebacker and receiver, and scored three of his four touchdowns in the final two and a half minutes of play.

Smith (5-9, 186, San Jose State) tied a league playoff record and set a franchise mark with three interceptions in the win over Grand Rapids. He helped produce the SaberCats first stop of the game with a pass breakup on fourth down in the first quarter, and then snagged a pick in the second, third and fourth quarters of the contest. Smith totaled 4.5 tackles on the night and now has nine career postseason interceptions.

Geathers was named to his second straight All-Ironman Team in 2008 and this week’s award marked the second time he was selected as the Ironman of the Week. It was also the second instance a pair of SaberCats took two of the three Players of the Week awards. Mark Grieb and Marquis Floyd were tabbed as Offensive and Defensive players during Week 13.

Philadelphia Soul QB Matt D’Orazio was awarded the Offensive Player of the Week.
